Joseph L. McCourt Middle School is a 6-8 school in the diverse and dynamic community of Cumberland, a town of 35,000 residents in northern Rhode Island. The mission of Joseph L. McCourt Middle School is to support, teach, and inspire our students to be hard workers, problem solvers, and empathetic global citizens. We live this mission every day, both in and out of the classroom and believe wholeheartedly that education of children isn’t just made up of academics, but rather through a whole child approach.

Daily, we, as a school, work diligently to ensure stability and consistency for our students academically, socially and emotionally, as well as physically.  We know that we are one phase of a continuum of education, and we aim to meet every student where they are and provide personalized instruction and support that will prepare them for high school and beyond.   We offer core courses that challenge our students, as well as engage them in the arts. We offer students the opportunity to concentrate in a specific area of the performing arts (Band, Chorus, STEM, Studio art).  The school counseling program follows the national programs that have been deemed to be best practice for addressing prosocial behavior and response to challenging situations. Our physical education program teaches students both movement and teamwork.

Technology integration is also a major part of the fabric of our classrooms.  Students and teachers now operate in the same manner that keeps up with the demands of the 21st century.  Our students rise to the occasion and are prepared for real life application and generalization of the skills and concepts they learn each and every day.
