History

Ashton School is a twenty classroom elementary school which sits on a large open and wooded lot near the geographical center of Cumberland. It was constructed in two phases in 1959 and 1963. Originally, it served the educational needs of children in grades one through eight but since the construction of the town’s two middle schools in the early 1970’s, it has assumed the role of educating neighborhood students in the elementary grades only. The student population in recent years has fluctuated between approximately 350 and 390 students in grades preschool through grade 5.

The general unwritten philosophy of our school is to work hard and have fun. Within this context, the school’s staff works diligently at ensuring that all students receive the very best education possible in an environment that stimulates students to stretch to their highest levels as they learn, problem solve, create, and appreciate their world.
