Dear Students, Staff, and Families:

Spring Recess is here! A much-anticipated break for many. Enjoy your week, whether you choose to relax and recharge or take advantage of the time to catch up on some personal projects.

Closing in on the end of a school year is a great time to celebrate student accomplishments, and Cumberland has a lot to celebrate.

  • Congratulations to Desmond Roper, the 2025 valedictorian, and Akmal Shaik, the salutatorian, at Cumberland High School. Desmond and Akmal, as the top two academic achievers in a graduating class of 350 students, deserve immense recognition for their dedication and hard work.
  • SkillsUSA is the #1 workforce development organization for students. They empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members. Cumberland High School’s SkillsUSA advisory, which is led by teachers Carol Cardoso and Denise Provost, recently took their team to the SkillsUSA competition in Warwick. Zackary Rossi, Emma Cruise, Catalina Chaparro, and Matthew Fontaine took home the Gold Medal in Entrepreneurship. They are preparing to take their business on the road this summer to compete in Georgia for a national title. Congratulations, Emma, Zackary, Catalina, and Matthew. In addition to our Gold Medalist, Dylan Skurka, who was our Silver Medalist, will be representing Rhode Island in the Extemporaneous Speaking category in Georgia. Best of luck to you all at Nationals.
  • Congratulations to Ashton Elementary School’s Golden Ticket Winner, Chase Corbeille!

We are hovering right around 40 days left of the 2024-2025 School Year; let’s make the most of it!

Sincerely,

Philip D. Thornton, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
