North Cumberland Middle School Closed Friday, October 23, 2020

Dear Students, Staff, and Parents,

We learned this morning that a North Cumberland Middle School student has tested positive for Covid-19.  As a result, the administration has determined that students and staff should remain home tomorrow, Friday, October 23rd.  Tomorrow will be a distance learning day.  A deep cleaning will take place at NCMS tomorrow while students and staff are out of the building.

We have been in contact with the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).  They will be commencing with contact tracing.  Anyone who has been in contact with the student will be contacted by RIDOH.  Any decisions regarding the reopening of NCMS will be made at the direction of RIDOH.

Due to confidentiality laws, we cannot release the name or grade of the student who tested positive.  We need to respect the student and family’s privacy.  We can report that the student is asymptomatic.

We will be sure to keep you updated as we learn more from RIDOH.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Mitchell

McCourt Middle School Closed Thursday, October 22, 2020

Good evening,

As of 7:30 PM this evening, we have not received guidance from the Rhode Island Department of Health regarding whether we should continue with one more day of distance learning or if we can open school at Joseph L. McCourt Middle School tomorrow.  Given these circumstances, we will continue with one more day of distance learning for our students tomorrow, Thursday, October 22nd.  This will give students, staff and families an opportunity to plan accordingly.  We hope to be able to provide information by the end of the day tomorrow regarding school on Friday.

We understand that this has created some uncertainty, but we will always prioritize the health and safety of our students and staff when we make a decision like this.  We also appreciate the positive feedback that we have received from our families and constituents throughout this situation.

Sincerely,

Robert Mitchell
