Superintendent’s Message – Distance Learning Day 2/2/21

Good Evening, 

All Cumberland School Department buildings will be closed tomorrow, February 2, 2021.  The snow day will be a distance learning day for all students and staff.  After school activities are canceled.  
Administrative office staff will work remotely.

Superintendent Search Information

Superintendent’s Communication – 1.29.21

• As I mentioned at last night’s School Committee meeting, our administrative team is planning to bring students back for more in-person learning.  No definite timeline has been set as of yet.  We will be sure to provide time for everyone to plan accordingly.
• The safety of our students and staff will guide our decision making. 
• The School Committee and I have received a number of specific questions related to bringing students back for more in-person learning.  If you have school specific questions, please contact your child’s principal directly.  They will be able to answer your questions.
• There are a number of challenges that will need to be addressed before we bring students back.  Please be patient as we do our best to get them resolved as quickly as possible.  Each of our schools will be conducting forums before students return for more in-person learning to answer any questions that you may have.
• Cumberland, as permitted by the RIDOH, has elected to maintain the preferred 14 day travel quarantine for anyone returning from international travel or travel to a state with a higher than 5% positivity rate (RI DOH State Listing).  We do not provide a “test out” option for our students and staff.  
• The search for a new Superintendent has begun.  Our Human Resource Director, Katherine Duncanson is leading this process,  Focus groups involving interested students, staff, parents, and community members are being created.  Please use the attached link if you are interested in participating. • The updated COVID-19 spreadsheet is provided for your review.
• There is support for moving educators up on the vaccination schedule.  Commissioner Infante-Green, Lieutenant Governor McKee, and the Superintendents Association are advocating to get educators vaccinated sooner rather than later.
• The vaccination process will require a great deal of coordination between the State, Department of Health, Town Government, and the School Department.  Meetings have taken place to begin the planning process and more are scheduled as the vaccine becomes more available.

• Como mencioné en la reunión del Comité Escolar de anoche, nuestro equipo administrativo está planeando traer a los estudiantes para que aprendan más en persona. Aún no se ha establecido un cronograma definido. Nos aseguraremos de que todos tengan tiempo para planificar en consecuencia.
