The Cumberland Preschool provides an integrated setting for children with special needs as well as those typically developing. Some of our children are working to overcome developmental delay, physical impairment, speech delays and autism. Our typically developing children benefit from highly skilled teachers, an environment that fosters strong social skills as well as an educational curriculum aligned to the RI Early Learning Standards. Children are chosen through a lottery system and pay a tuition fee.

Morning session for 3 year olds: M-Th 9:40-12:00

The Cumberland School Department’s Early Childhood Program is based on the belief that the first years in a child’s life are the most crucial to his/her development. Research has shown that early concepts, attitudes, and skills acquired by a child positively impacts later development.

At the Cumberland Preschool Program, we understand the importance of offering a developmentally appropriate curriculum allowing children of all abilities to learn through play using safe, developmentally appropriate and challenging materials and equipment.

Our team of experts implements a high-quality curriculum aligned with the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards focused on Physical Health and Motor Development, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Language Development, Cognitive Development, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Creative Arts.

Our program exposes children to secure, consistent relationships with responsive adults and provides ample opportunities for positive interactions with peers as the foundation for socio-emotional health and academic success.

We implement a child-centered system of authentic assessment aligned with the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards to track, support, and optimize each child’s academic, physical, and socio-emotional growth. Program-wide strategies ensure differentiated teaching and learning experiences that meet each child’s developmental levels, learning styles and interests.

Is Your Little One a Community Partner?

We are seeking children ages 3 and 4 to serve as community partners in our preschool classes.  Our preschool classes have both morning and afternoon sessions that follow the Cumberland School Department calendar. Enrollment is open through lottery to resident children of Cumberland. The district’s preschool program is primarily designed for children with disabilities; however, typically developing children who enjoy a well rounded, developmentally appropriate preschool class also may enroll to serve as language and role models for the students with disabilities. Our community partners make up 51% of the classroom enrollment. Frequently, parents note that peer models also learn important life lessons on acceptance, tolerance, and perseverance from their classmates.
